HARD ROCK CAFE VISIT

Ian Fowell, the chief editor of ESC Covers is currently in Stockholm, Sweden to attend the Swedish 2017 Eurovision selection.

Last night he visited the Hard rock cafe there and briefly saw Richard Herrey, the owner and one of the Herrey brothers who won Eurovision for Sweden in 1984 with “Diggi loo, diggi ley”.

He also met up with Emma from Finland. She was in this year’s Finnish selection and she performed her entry “Circle of life”.

INTERVIEW – MIRIAM OF IN FUSION

Now we are with the last of the three IN FUSION girls, Miriam and her answers to the questions from ESC Covers and Eurovision South Africa.
1 – NORWAY – since you are Norwegian, what is your best highlight from a Norwegian entry. You could say any artist and this or that song and the reason why
My Norwegian highlight will have to be the semi-finals of Melodi Grand Prix 2011, when the metalband Keep of Kalessin and Alexander Rybak got together and performed “The Divine Land” during the break. I was blown away by the mix of genres and how good they sounded together! I really wish they would get together and do more exciting stuff together! I would definitely buy that record.
2 – SWEDEN – since your composers are Swedish, what is your best highlight from a Swedish entry – the same as with Norway

Sweden have had so many great  entries! BUT my favorite is kind of a guilty pleasure. Im almost embarrassed to say, being a rockchick and all, but I used to dance and sing to this one as a child. I was`t even born when this aired (1984), but Herreys – Diggi-loo diggi-ley was stuck on my mind for a while. So I have to say, it is one of my favorites because I`ve heard it for so long!
Other then that Loreens – Euphoria is my all time favorite Swedish hit song of this era!
3 – EUROVISION – now the same question of a Eurovision entry from any country but Sweden or Norway
How can I possibly chose one!? There are so many amazing memories.
I simply fell in love with last years entry from Belgium, Laura Tesoro with “What`s The Pressure”! Such a catchy song, and Laura was just super-cute with her cool choreography !
But I have to chose Conchita – Rise Like a Phoenix(2014) as the most memorable moment in ESC-history for me! Hands down!
Miriam, thank you for your answers, I too love DIGGI LOO DIGGI LEY and last year when Eurovision was in Stockholm, I took an Afrikaans cover of the song for Richard Herrey who is the CEO of Hard rock cafe there. And Danne was with us at the event, so ask him about it.

LONELY PLANET COMPETITION – ENTRY NUMBER SIXTEEN

Stockholm – super special by Michaela Sowden from Australia
Very little could have surpassed Copenhagen 2014 for me. I mean Conchita winning was my height of my longstanding following of Eurovision. Just amazing! Then to go to Vienna in 2015 was brilliant. How could anything get better?
My expectations of Sweden was up there. It was once again a family affair with number two son, his girlfriend and number two daughter. We were meeting up in Stockholm, after a brief get together in my original home town of Klagenfurt, Austria.
My first high arrived before leaving for Stockholm. I received the news that my fan accreditation had come through. I was on cloud nine! Such a coveted trophy, one that was not expected. My mood was set.
Arriving in Stockholm was traumatic, for the first time in years, me a seasoned traveller had not booked a seat on the train to Stockholm from Copenhagen. What was I thinking? We managed to get on the train. Asked the conductor about seats, and were told we had could have a seat til one  and a half hours out of Stockholm. Then we would have to stand., which wouldn’t have been so bad, as the luggage was safe and secure, and my plan was to visit the dining car. Hmm, did not go down to well with Elle. So off we hopped onto the next train, three hours out of Stockholm, at a train station that was not user friendly. Finally found the next train to Stockholm, to be told that there were no seats at all. With some swift negotiating, some very desperate expressions on our face, and stating we would be happy to stand all the way to Stockholm, with some visits to the Dining car, the conductor softened and let us on. Yes we had to pay for seats, OK in the dining car and had to promise to move around, but hey we were again on our way to Stockholm! We eventually found somewhere to store our luggage, after Elle as punishment for her bad advice rearranged the luggage area. We spent the whole time in the dining car, with occasional movement around the train separately, ( he never said he had to move around together) eating and drinking our way to Stockholm. We arrived late but still managed to meet up with some really great people that afternoon.
Love Sweden! Thoroughly enjoyed the ABBA Museum. One memory that will stay with me was my rendition of Diggy loo in Swedish, a language I have no knowledge of, thankfully though being saved by a fellow fan.
The red carpet was phenomenal, and I had to endure the wrath of Elle, as that coveted selfie of her and Måns did not happen due to camera malfunction. There were so many opportunities to run into the stars and get a selfie. I gave a few koala away, one to a very grateful Eneda from Albania.
Oh, the press center was just fantastic. I loved manning  that fan desk for three hours, even if I was alone! I had fun talking to all the press and to get their opinions.
The people I met up with are just the best in the world!
Would I do this again? Of course, the Eurovision bug has bitten me, once a fan, always a fan.

DIGGI LOO DIGGI LEY, ITS EUROVISION IN MAY

In honour of Lighthouse X I said there will be 10 competitions in the run up to be departing on 30 April. so this is the 10th competition.

But I have misjudged myself with how many items there are for fans to win, so there may be more competitions in the last days before my departure – I will see.

This one will be special. In 1984 THE HERREYS won Eurovision from starting position 1 with Diggi loo diggi ley, dancing in their golden shoes. I really love this song and it has been a dream of me to have it covered in Afrikaans (it is quite an easy song to cover in various languages and I have covers of it in at least 7 other languages besides Swedish and English). Now finally after 32 years there is an Afrikaans version – obviously called DIGGI LOO DIGGI LEY as well. I do not want to say too much now of this because it is a surprise gift to Richard Herrey (one of the 3 brothers) and now the CEO of the Hard rock cafe in Stockholm. I will give him a copy when we are in Stockholm, the exact day and time will be announced. but it will be either Tuesday 10 May during the OGAE Finnish pre-party and Thursday 12 May when we meet with Thomas Gson and Minus one of Cyprus.

There will be one extra copy for a fan of Eurovision who will be in Stockholm and all you have to do to win this is share as a comment to this post your memories of Diggi loo diggi ley.

As you can see from the attached article from 1984, The Herreys were suppose to come to South Africa but half way on their journey they were called back by the Swedish government in protest against the government of South Africa at the time. So I was deprived of seeing Herreys and only met Richard for the first time in 2007 in Helsinki during the Eurovision there.
