ESC Covers again google translated this post from Norwegian to English.
This is a blog post and only represents the writer Morten Thomassen’s own views.
Before the year ends, I think it might be a good idea to look back at some memorable songs from Austrian ESC history, and this time I’ll focus on 2018.
After the semi-finals were introduced in our beloved competition, our Austrian friends have had a rather bumpy history, they have not qualified 7 times, they have won twice and mostly otherwise they have finished in the lower half of the results list in the final, with the exception of one song that I will discuss today.
Cesar Sampson was the guy who led the jury vote in 2018 and strangely enough, he only managed to get 71 points from the people, so the ladies from Cyprus and Israel passed him on the final results list.
The song was called “Nobody But You” and young Mr. Sampson probably got a little extra attention due to his appearance and such, and since at that time I could find myself imitating some of the artists, this guy was an obvious victim.
I actually got the guy to send greetings to several celebrity ladies in Norway, but privacy prevents me from saying which ones, after all, they have husbands at home.
The song itself is a pretty decent pop song but with clear soul tones and so much melancholy that it captivates me and it actually has everything the juries like, an outstanding artist who delivers the goods vocally and has exactly the empathy you should have on a TV screen, simple recipe, but difficult to achieve.
Next year Cesar is back in the ESC spotlight, he will be the host of the national final and who knows, maybe it’s just a warm-up for the international final, I wouldn’t mind seeing him host that particular program and maybe he’ll sing his song from 2018 again then?
