ESC NORGE LOOKS AT MEMORABLE SONGS FROM AUSTRIA, THE 2026 HOST COUNTRY – 1984

ESC COVERS have again google translated the Norwegian post from ESC Norge from Norwegian to English.

This is a blog post and only represents the writer Morten Thomassen’s own views.

Before the year ends, I think it might be a good idea to look at some memorable songs from Austrian ESC history, and this time I’m focusing on 1984.

Do you have any ESC songs that are a kind of guilty pleasure? By that expression, I mean that it’s a song that you really shouldn’t like based on your usual musical preferences, but you like it very much anyway, almost without quite knowing why.

An Austrian ESC song that is on my list is undoubtedly their entry from 1984, the artist’s name was Anita and the song she sang was called “Einfach Weg”.

The title means “Just Go” in Norwegian, but the lady stood quite still on stage and the walking is probably more about leaving a relationship that hasn’t worked out quite as well as it should for a long time, and then you leave it, according to Madam Spanner, which was the lady’s last name.

Results-wise, things didn’t go Austria’s way this year either, they got one of their last 7 places this year, but I’ve always had a pretty good sense of songs that end up at the wrong end of the results list and this song is no exception.

I’m having a hard time explaining why this is such a big favorite of mine, it’s probably just the mood it gives me, it’s a simple and straightforward pop song and it has some melancholic undertones that probably also lift it up enough that I like it very much, but that said, I understand those who might think that this is fucking boring.

The performance itself on TV has a strange thing about it, in the opening and closing shots we see that she has a female chorister, but the rest of the TV time that lady is hidden away, possibly because she simply gives Anita quite a lot of vocal support, a bit of a disservice to that chorister given.

Another one who sings is a guy we would see many times on the ESC stage, Gary Lux debuted the year before as part of the group Westend and later he would be a solo artist twice and a chorister twice more, but enough about him, don’t go anywhere, enjoy Anita’s song instead.
