ESC Covers, like in previous years, google translated ESC Norge discussion on the Eurovision song contest positions, from Norwegian to English.
This is a blog post and only represents the writer Morten Thomassen’s own views.
The term “Russian music” may be considered by many to be something very typically Norwegian, but it has obviously also taken root among our Icelandic friends in the brother duo VÆB, who performed the song “ROA”.
Not particularly surprised, those who sat on the national juries were particularly interested in giving points to this, Russian music seems to be a big “No Else Thanks” for these and it was the 33 points they got from the people that saved them from last place in the final, but I think that’s exactly what Matthias and Halfdan didn’t care about, after two years out of the final they took what is probably a victory to get there and in the semi-final they actually beat 3 countries that took them when the juries also had their say in the final.
You would think that people from the homeland of Russian music would have embraced this, but we only thought it was worth three points, the most like it was those in Denmark who gave them 10 points for the song that was about getting rid of all things.
No one should take away from the boy in VÆB the fact that they had tons of energy on board and they put it to good use and in my opinion they bring out the energy in the song in the performance in a very good way and I’m glad that they can handle the brawls vocally too.
This is simply the way such a song should be performed, and when you also turn on the charm at times, this is very similar in my opinion.
The main reason they don’t do better I think is just the type of song they perform and the fact that they sing in Icelandic which makes it a little harder to sing along to the song and get it into your head if you know what I mean.
It’s always fun to see what our Icelandic friends send and as the only Nordic country that hasn’t won, maybe it was about time, next year it’s actually 40 years since they first participated so it should be about time.
