Like previous years, ESC COVERS will again share a blog post from Morten Thomassen of OGAE NORWAY with his views on the positions reached by all 35 2026 entries. ESC Covers google translated it from Norwegian to English.
For some strange reason, it has almost become customary that the host country does not exactly do well on home soil, and that was the case with COSMO and his song “Tanzschein”, which despite being the last entry in the final only garnered 6 points, 5 of which came from German TV viewers who obviously felt they had dance permission to give this some points.
Now it wasn’t exactly a big surprise that the home team came so far down the results list, those who placed odds for the final night had our Austrian friend in second to last place so maybe he belonged there.
It’s true that this is a fairly danceable song, but it is almost completely devoid of charm and what the meaning of the masked dancers and the blue star around one eye was is still a mystery to me.
Something that really pisses me off is the fact that there were 6 people on stage where it seemed like only COSMO was singing, but you hear a lot of chorusing and you see that it is “sung” without the artist himself having the microphone close to his mouth. In my eyes, this qualifies as cheating and he was not the only one who sinned in this area.
All in all, this was a song that didn’t have the elements that make a song interesting enough and when the vocals are a bit shaky it takes a lot for you to feel like voting for something like this and maybe someone thought that now that Austria had just won, we’ll have to vote for someone else.
Not since 2016 had the Austrian entry been selected from a national final and it is questionable whether they will bet on it next year, perhaps it would be much safer to just choose one artist, if that happens we will have to wait until next year and see.
