Our Montenegrin friends have tried their hand at this competition 14 times (as their own country) and only 2 times have they managed to make it to the final, but this year there were some who had hoped that the finalists would get a place in the very prestigious ESC company and they were in 11th place with the odds when their semi-final started, so they should be somewhat within reach.
Tamara Zivkovic sang a tough song called “Nova Zora”, which means “a new dawn”, but unfortunately this song did not survive its semi-final night and the following morning was probably rather black for our Montenegrin friend and black was probably a bit too much of the recurring theme in this song.
It’s true that you have a dramatic song that requires a dramatic performance, but here there was a bit of an overdose of the things that drag you down and I can start with a vocal that is at times more screaming than strong.
There’s nothing wrong with a slightly eye-catching costume, but here what the lady was wearing disrupted the song more than it enhanced it. It might seem like both she and the dancers had “stole” religious clothing, and it seems a bit strange in a song about strong women, a strange choice there, in other words.
So even though parts of the song were danceable and could have been suitable for a cool dance club, I think most people who voted were more confused than they should have been, they simply didn’t understand what this song was about and I’m afraid that’s why many people are turned off.
I would so sincerely like our friends from this Balkan country to make it to a final soon, they probably have the unfortunate record of having been the furthest away from the final and thus deserve a place in the final soon, maybe they should just calm down a bit on all the drama and give us some calmer music that can be enjoyed.
