ESC Covers, like in previous years, google translated ESC Norge discussion on the Eurovision song contest positions, from Norwegian to English.
This is a blog post and only represents the writer Morten Thomassen’s own views.
Sometimes I don’t understand very much about a song’s placement, which is probably largely due to the fact that I never got the hang of the song by the Lithuanian group Katarsis. It was and still is utterly boring to my ears and I simply struggle to understand why others might like it.
Because with 34 points from the jury and 62 points from the public, this gave them 16th place and they were only 4 points short of reaching 100 points, which must be said to be a relatively respectable score and this country has qualified for all finals in the 20s and is therefore in a good position.
Your eyes means the song title “Tavo Akys” and when I count, probably 20 of the 26 songs in the final contained other languages, in some cases in addition to English, so in this sense they are continuing the trend of singing in their own language and this country has been singing in its own language, in whole or in part, for the last four years now.
As I said, this type of music doesn’t appeal to me, but what we saw and heard on stage is a performance that is coherent, the gloom of the song comes through well in both the vocal effort and the actual stage performance, so in this sense, the four in the group Katarsis set the right mood for this type of song and it’s no wonder that those who like this type of music clearly had every reason to like it.
However, such music probably has a limited audience, so this probably wouldn’t have been a winning song under any circumstances, but our Lithuanian friends should be commended for contributing to the genre diversity in this year’s edition of ESC, which is something to be appreciated, no matter how much you like such songs yourself.
Many unusual songs are gold and others are gray stone, let’s hope this country will compete with gold next year, after all, they are the only Baltic country that has not won yet.
