ESC Covers, like in previous years, google translated ESC Norge discussion on the Eurovision song contest positions, from Norwegian to English.
This is a blog post and only represents the writer Morten Thomassen’s own views.
Now we move on to the songs that were in the final and from now on, at least the order of results is indisputable, I would think, and perhaps somewhat deservedly so. The song that made it to the final with the smallest margin, which was from San Marino and was called “Tutta l’Italia”, came in last place.
Gabry Ponte was the name of the DJ who was the artist on this entry, but he wasn’t actually the one singing, but I think a DJ should have some advantages and as a DJ he was already known for the song “Blue (Da Ba De)” with the group Eiffel 65, but if you’re a real ESC nerd you also know that he helped write the Austrian entry in 2022.
Our San Marino friends aren’t exactly spoiled by reaching the final, this was actually only the 4th time they made it to the final and as if that wasn’t enough, this was the fourth time they came in last place, the previous three were in the semi-finals, so now they also have a last place in the final to brag about, to the extent that there is anything to brag about then.
Not unexpectedly, the jury was not so enthusiastic about this and the people gave them twice as many points, but 9 + 18 is only 27 and that gave them last place in the final and if it hadn’t been for the country that was honored in the song, the catch would have only been 9 points and there is every reason to believe that the final place was saved by Italy who gave them full pot in the semi-final.
The reason why not many people other than Italians fell for this was probably that what happened on the TV screen appeared rather boring and bland, and even though there is an accordion that makes this a bit folky, it probably didn’t stand out enough for a party-minded audience to find the courage to vote for it.
The song itself isn’t all that exciting, and although there was little to complain about the vocals, even with an excellent starting number that came second to last in the final, I think most of those who voted had already found who they were going to vote for.
This country, which has tons of songs in its national selection, should be proud that they try their best every year, and one can hope that one day they will come up with a song that is better than number 19 in the final, then they will set a new personal record.
