ESC Covers, like in previous years, google translated ESC Norge discussion on the Eurovision song contest positions, from Norwegian to English.
This is a blog post and only represents the writer Morten Thomassen’s own views.
Sometimes those who set the odds for who will make it to the final are completely off the mark, I would almost say they are not on land, but far out at sea, last year Latvia made it to the final with only a 15% chance of getting there according to our friends in the betting industry, but this year they managed to miss even more.
The Portuguese group Napa only had a 14% chance of making it to the finals and there was a never-ending gasp through the hall when they were called out as finalists and I also think that they themselves didn’t really believe that the song “Deslocado” would be final material, but it was.
I think those who set the odds believe a little too much in fans judging the songs in advance and a little too little in voting history which shows that some countries have so many expatriates who can vote in the country they live in now that it could get them through from a semi-final where, by all accounts, not too many votes.
The Norwegian translation of the song title is skewed and the song received almost three times as many jury votes as audience votes, and basically this song ended up where it deserved to be.
I was never a fan of this song, but the guys in Napa deserve credit for being able to convey the mood of the song in an outstanding way. The song is quite stagnant, and it’s fitting that the performance is also stagnant, even though there is sometimes a bit of energy on stage.
The song itself is probably too boring for many people to fall for this, however our Portuguese friends have now been in the finals for 5 years in a row and they have never had that before and in addition they are very keen on singing in the beautiful language Portuguese, hats off to that too and in addition in retrospect this song has taken off so well on social media so it has become a huge hit.
