ESC Covers, like in previous years, google translated ESC Norge discussion on the Eurovision song contest positions, from Norwegian to English.
This is a blog post and only represents the writer Morten Thomassen’s own views.
Another ESC year is over and as usual I’m taking a deep dive into why each participating country came in the place they did.
Naturally, I start at the bottom and for the record, I have ranked the countries that did not make it to the final according to the number of points they received in the semi-final they participated in and I do not take into account how many votes they could get from, so the order of those that did not make it to the final must therefore be taken with a pinch of salt.
No matter how you look at it, it was the guys in the Azerbaijani band Mamagama who had to settle for last place this year with the 7 points they received from San Marino, which doesn’t really have televoting and gives points based on some calculation method.
For many years, our Azerbaijani friends mostly used only Swedish composers and we fans called for local forces to step in on the composer side of the competition and they have now tried this for 3 years now and the score has been a total of 22 points in the three attempts, so the question is whether the Swedish bus or for that matter the Norwegian bus will have to take a long trip until next year.
The song was called “Run With U”, an easy-going pop song with clear 80s vibes that worked out quite well, but there was something missing, perhaps not least charm from those on stage.
The stage show itself was at times just messy and lacked a common thread that could capture the audience, one can almost wonder if they are not fully committed to this competition anymore as they have shown themselves for the last 3 years and it doesn’t help that the vocals are a bit shaky and the energy in the song doesn’t come across on the TV screen.
This is a bit strange, considering that this country has long been a leader in having visual performances that you just had to notice. I think that now there is a collection at the bottom, third-last, second-last and last in the semi-final in a row in a semi-final should make someone really take action, so let’s hope that’s exactly what happens.
