ESC Covers, like in previous years, google translated ESC Norge discussion on the Eurovision song contest positions, from Norwegian to English.
This is a blog post and only represents the writer Morten Thomassen’s own views.
With the same number of points as Belgium, but with points from 8 countries as opposed to Belgium which “only” got from 4 countries, Klemen from Slovenia took 13th place in the first semi-final, but when we combine all the countries he falls down to 34th place.
“How Much Time Do We Have Left” undeniably sounds like a dramatic song, and the drama was that his wife had been diagnosed with cancer that the doctors predicted would have the worst possible outcome.
Fortunately, the medical miracle happens and his wife joins him on stage towards the end of the song, and you would think that would result in not a single eye being dry.
It didn’t happen, ballads were obviously not quite the thing this season and it turned out that singing only in English wasn’t a big move either, all five songs that didn’t make it past semi-final 1 were sung only in English, in fact only Kyle Alessandro made it to the final of those who chose to sing in that language.
I really liked this song myself, but as is usually the case when I like something, the rest of Europe doesn’t care about it, and I understand that if you’re not moved by the content of the song, this song can quickly feel quite boring.
Now, perhaps Klemen’s starting position wasn’t very advantageous, sandwiched between Poland and Estonia, but I still think that what happens on stage has the right amount of empathy and strength in the performance.
It’s possible that the happy family pictures shown at the beginning of the song confused some, and the thing about him hanging upside down was probably just felt strange and unnecessary by many.
All in all, this was probably a bit too forgettable for most people and right afterwards they were supposed to be served coffee and that perhaps felt much more tempting.
We hope our Slovenian friends tempt us with more receptive music next year, if they participate then, they are also one of the countries that are in the think tank especially because of the result of the telephone vote.
