Like previous years, ESC COVERS will again share a blog post from Morten Thomassen of OGAE NORWAY with his views on the positions reached by all 35 2026 entries.
If you thought our Azerbaijani friends reached rock bottom last year with last place and 7 points, you were sorely mistaken, because this year the artist Jiva only managed to collect 2 measly points that she otherwise received from the Bulgarian jury for the song “Just Go”.
You would almost think that it was a bit dangerous to remake a song about just getting away, because you would almost think that this country, which had had good rankings for many years, wanted to get away from the whole thing.
I, along with many others, have been wishing for this country to use foreign composers for many years, something that some in the Azerbaijani delegation themselves complained about to me back in 2019, that they should use someone with a domestic passport, and they have done so for the last four years, and the result has been quite disappointing.
No finals and only 25 points have been collected so far, so it’s questionable whether those involved in this country’s ESC participation might have to bite the bullet and bring in musical emergency help on the composer side, because the artists they send aren’t that crazy.
It’s possible that they’ve also had their participation budget reduced considerably all the time, so that four white curtains fluttering in the wind, a dancer who was rarely seen, and a dress with long strings that the artist herself had to get out of were all they could afford.
When the song is also quite forgettable, it doesn’t make matters any better, it has melancholic undertones that I can actually like, but all in all, many people probably found that it was precisely when this song was performed that the pee break could basically be taken, something you should basically try to avoid if you are a true ESC fan.
And not that I should and should get too hung up on the appearance of the person performing, but putting on two “mascara-crying gutters” of makeup was hardly a smart move, no, now there needs to be some serious tightening up for this country, you can do so much better.
