OGAE Second Chance Song Contest

The OGAE Second Chance Song Contest is an annual event among the OGAE member clubs. Four clubs competed in the first contest in 1987 (the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom). Originally called ‘Europe’s Favourite’, this popular contest has expanded and now involves more than 20 clubs.

Every northern summer, following the Eurovision Song Contest, each club can enter one song that failed to win their countries’ selection process for the annual Eurovision Song Contest. The members of each club choose from the songs that did not win and select one to represent the club in the event. Votes are cast by members of the OGAE clubs and are returned to the organising club, which is generally the club that won the previous year’s event.

In recent years, only songs from televised national finals (such as Sweden’s Melodifestivalen) have been permitted to compete in the contest. This has meant that some clubs have been ineligible to compete. However, those clubs are still able to vote via participation in guest juries.

OGAE Rest of the World represents countries that do not have an OGAE club of their own. Our first participation came at the 2009 contest, where we chose Slovakia to represent us.

The 26th OGAE Second Chance Song Contest was hosted by the Rest of the World club in 2012 after our win in 2011. Our chosen representative in 2011 had been Yohanna from Iceland, who performed ‘Nótt’ and came 1st out of 21 songs.
