Before the year ends, I think it might be a good idea to look at some memorable songs from Austrian ESC history, and this time I’m focusing on 1990.
Sometimes an ESC artist experiences that they receive more attention for other things than the reason they go to the ESC, namely to perform a song.
For Simone, who represented her home country in 1990 with the song “Keine Mauern Mehr”, the lead-up to her ESC participation was anything but calm and pleasant.
Like several contributions the year after the Berlin Wall fell, her song was about walls falling and new opportunities arising, and the lady using various opportunities is certainly Simone Stelzer, which is her full name.
She didn’t actually win the Austrian final that year, she came in second, but days after the final, the winning song “Das Beste” with the duo Duett was canceled when it was discovered that the song had already been submitted to the German final in 1988 and thus had been made public in some way a year earlier.
As if this wasn’t enough, the female singer in Duett mitt “fainted” during the performance of the song and after some medical treatment they were allowed to sing again and many believed that it had favored the song among those who voted, because some doubted that the fainting was completely real.
